I can’t tell if it is due to my age or the sheer fact that Disney’s acquisition of LucasFilm has tarnished my relationship with the Star Wars franchise. I feel out of sync with the characters and the environments, after many spending my earlier years with deep passion and growth with George Lucas’ work. Well, I am still excited to see The Force Awakens that will be directed by J.J. Abrahams but that’s beside the point. I am here to talk about the new RPG titled Star Wars: Uprising.
I’ve spent some time playing the upcoming mobile RPG as it’s currently soft launched in the New Zealand App Store. Some outlets have described it as a ‘Diablo-like’ RPG game, but I would argue that notion. Once you dive into the gameplay, it’s a lot lighter in action with rather cheesy dialogue. But then again, maybe I find it “cheesy” because I have lost touch with the franchise and the new generation of Star Wars.
The game itself allows players to choose a species and customize their own character. I thought this was a neat feature as you can really choose from a variety of styles to make a character of your choosing. The action takes place after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. There are several missions, including real-time co-op missions against the Empire. I have yet to get that far into the co-op missions, but so far I found myself roaming around with my hero blasting through barrels and auto blasting enemies. You can double tap to tumble, but the action itself doesn’t not feel fluid or engaging.
I will have to give it some time and yes, it is “free-to-played” so collecting in-game currencies is a big part of the game. If you’re in select territories, you can pick up for free to get an early hands-on demo or you can check out the first 10 minutes of gameplay below.
